Stratospheric modulation of the Boreal response to Pliocene tropical Pacific sea surface temperatures

► We model the climate response to early Pliocene tropical temperature anomalies. ► The stratosphere modulates the Boreal response especially in winter. ► Greenland and North America warm more in winter, but northern Eurasia cools. ► More frequent stratospheric sudden warmings are important to this response.
