An image analysis procedure for recognising and measuring bedding in seemingly homogeneous rocks

► A new procedure is described for determining bedding in seemingly homogeneous rocks. ► Field-oriented cubes are used as samples, typically 5 cm in side length. ► Image analysis of the scanned cube faces gives the traces of the bedding on the faces. ► Bedding trace orientations from mutually perpendicular cube faces are then combined. ► A test of the procedure shows it can give excellent estimates of 3D bedding attitude.
