Identification of the base of the lower-to-middle Campanian Globotruncana ventricosa Zone: Comments on reliability and global correlations

► We discuss the reliability of G. ventricosa as zonal marker for the Campanian. ► Specimens close to G. ventricosa are wrongly used to identify the G. ventricosa Zone. ► One species is formally described as new and named Globotruncana neotricarinata. ► We found a good sequence of foraminiferal bioevents useful for global correlations. ► The new mid Campanian Contusotruncana plummerae Zone is here defined.
