Cleveiplegma nov. gen., a new generic name for the radiolarian species Rhizoplegma boreale (Cleve, 1899)

The structural study of the inner shell of the Quaternary radiolarian Rhizoplegma boreale (Cleve) proves that this species does not belong to the genus Rhizoplegma Haeckel that has as inner shell a spherical macrosphere. The inner shell of this species is of microspheric type (< 50 μm), heteropolar, with a tetrapetaloid structure at the apical part suggesting that it is much closer to the genera Hexalonche Haeckel, Hexacontium Haeckel and Tetrapetalon Hollande and Enjumet than to Rhizoplegma. Consequently, the author erects for this species the genus Cleveiplegma nov. gen.

RésuméL’étude structurelle de la coque interne du radiolaire quaternaire Rhizoplegma boreale (Cleve) démontre que cette espèce n’appartient pas au genre Rhizoplegma Haeckel qui a comme coque interne une macrosphère parfaitement sphérique. La coque interne de cette espèce est de type microsphérique (< 50 μm), hétéropolaire, avec une structure tetrapétaloide de la partie apicale suggérant que cette espèce est plus proche des genres Hexalonche Haeckel, Hexacontium Haeckel et Tetrapetalon Hollande et Enjumet que du genre Rhizoplegma. En conséquence, l’auteur décrit pour cette espèce le nouveau genre Cleveiplegma nov. gen.
