• Pt structured catalyst was applied for the catalytic combustion of propionic acid.
• A novel competitive impregnation method was used for the preparation of catalysts.
• The prepared catalyst contained low Pt amount and well distribution condition.
• The prepared catalyst showed high activity and stability.
• The mechanism of the competitive impregnation method was proposed in detail.
The catalytic combustion of propionic acid was chosen as a model reaction to investigate Pt structured catalysts. A novel competitive impregnation method was used to improve the condition of Pt distribution and decrease the Pt amount. The prepared catalysts were compared with those prepared by the co-impregnation method. Results showed that the competitive impregnation method was preferable. Catcom-0.06 with 0.06 wt.% Pt and 35.1% Pt dispersion was prepared by the competitive impregnation method, and this catalyst exhibited high activity and stability. The mechanism of the competitive impregnation method was also proposed.
