• Chiral Mn(III)-salen complex catalyzed OKR of secondary alcohols.
• Sodium hypochlorite replaced PhI(OAc)2 as an oxidant for the reaction.
• Sodium hypochlorite is very cheap and easily available.
• The novel protocol is very efficient for the OKR of a variety of secondary alcohols.

Chiral Mn(III)-salen complex catalyzed oxidative kinetic resolution (OKR) of secondary alcohols has been achieved with cheap and easily available sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) as oxidant. The novel protocol is very efficient for the OKR of a variety of secondary alcohols at room temperature.

Chiral Mn(III)-salen complex catalyzed oxidative kinetic resolution (OKR) of secondary alcohols has been achieved with sodium hypochlorite as oxidant in the presence of catalytic amount of bromine.
