- A novel series of cross-linked Mannich based polymers has been synthesized.
- The polymers demonstrated high affinity for Pb(II) ions removal from water.
- The polymers showed potential application for wastewater treatment.
Three novel, highly cross-linked terpolymers were synthesized via Mannich polycondensation reaction. The cross-linked polymers were characterized by different spectroscopic (FT-IR, Solid 13C-NMR) techniques. Thermal properties were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The adsorption experiments were conducted under various conditions (pH, time, initial concentration of metal ions and temperature) which revealed the efficiency of the synthesized polymers in the removal of lead(II) ions. Adsorption results from model aqueous systems indicated the superiority of BisphenolS-paraformaldehyde-piperazine (BSPF) cross-linked polymer. Further investigation on BSPF proved its efficacy by â¼99% removal of lead ions from a real wastewater sample showing potential as an efficient adsorbent for industrial wastewater treatment.
