The temperature distribution in a reciprocating combustion engine has an impact on its wear and thermal efficiency. Uneven material properties, varied geometry, diverse heat loads and flow conditions make it unfeasible to use a simple analytical mathematical model that covers the heat transfer. The numerical steady state heat transfer model was used to calculate the external surfaces heat transfer coefficient and to develop two transient coupled models - one for the temperature distribution and one for engine's transient in-cylinder processes, including a combustion and species transport sub-models. The methods intended to decrease a computational time for a transient temperature equilibrium were used. The paper discusses the research results on a high power air-cooled aircraft radial engine. A temperature distribution was investigated in different model regions. A lumped heat transfer model was developed for engine walls.
