Distal order effects in stated preference surveys

► We study a new type of order effect using a survey about climate policy preferences. ► Earlier studies emphasize information order in the choice scenarios themselves. ► Our survey randomizes information order in prior attitude elicitation questions. ► Arbitrary order in background information can affect later choices and WTP amounts. ► Results suggest the importance of randomizing preliminary information in surveys.
