For the first time, Ti/Ce metal-to-metal charger-transfer (MMCT) moieties were covalently assembled onto the surface of graphene oxide (GO). The hybrid component material of Ti/Ce–GO exhibited the enhanced absorption in visible light with a tail extending up to 800 nm, also much higher photocatalytic activity in the degradation of Rhodamine B under the irradiation of visible light.

► Ti/Ce MMCT moieties were successfully assembled onto the surface of graphene oxide.
► Ti/Ce–GO materials exhibited the intense absorption in visible light.
► The absorption induced by photoexcited transition of Ti/Ce MMCT system was enhanced.
► Much higher photocatalytic activity irradiated by visible light was obtained.
