External deficits and non-performing loans in the recent financial crisis

► Banks' non-performing loans in 2009 are analysed with a cross-national sample and macroeconomic data. ► Mere credit growth before the crisis did not necessarily precede credit quality deterioration. ► A combination of a current account deficit and rapid credit growth seemed much more dangerous.
