Sclerosis and large volatilities: Two sides of the same coin

► The German labor market is known to be sclerotic (low labor market flows). ► We show that the German labor market is twice as volatile as the US labor market. ► We establish a theoretical connection between sclerosis and large volatilities. ► We provide evidence for the latter with cross-country data.
