Unemployment and labor force participation in the United States

►We question the unemployment invariance hypothesis for the US. ►We document a relationship between unemployment and labor force participation. ►Findings against the invariance hypothesis are in line with Österholm (2010). ►Cointegration analysis is robust to gender-specific data. ►Appropriate restrictions on the cointegrating relationship are tested.
