►We use a gravity equation to derive a comprehensive bilateral measure of trade costs. ►We derive a bilateral measure of trade costs for Spain in 1870-1913. ►We test the soundness of alternative direct measures of specific costs for Spain. ►The measure is only robust for the protection indexes that control for composition.
