► We test the effect of electoral rules and forms of government on agricultural policy. ► We use both cross-sectional and panel data estimators. ► Proportional and presidential democracies give more public support to agriculture. ► The constitutional effect is stronger for import sectors and staple food crops. ► The effects are independent from the ideology orientation of governments.
