Do VCs use inside rounds to dilute founders? Some evidence from Silicon Valley

► We analyze a hand-collected dataset of VC-backed Silicon Valley firms. ► We compare the terms and performance of inside versus outside rounds. ► We find little evidence that VCs use inside rounds to dilute founders. ► Inside rounds tend to be used as a backstop when outside financing is unavailable. ► Inside rounds tend to be conducted at relatively high valuations.
