Titania supported cobalt catalyst has been activated using synthesis gas with H2/CO ratio of 2/1. Activation temperatures in the range from 250 to 400 °C were considered. The activated catalyst was tested for Fischer–Tropsch (FT) reaction and compared to the catalyst activated using H2, the conventional reducing gas for an FT cobalt catalyst. Activation with synthesis gas led to a catalyst that showed more stability, activity and better product selectivity for the FT reaction than the H2 activated catalyst. TGA, TPR, XRD and H2 chemisorption and O2 titration techniques were used for catalyst characterization. The better catalytic performance for the catalyst reduced with synthesis gas was explained by an improved catalyst reduction.
