Co9Fe3Bi1Mo12O51 catalysts prepared by a co-precipitation method were calcined at various temperatures (475–675 °C), and were applied to the oxidative dehydrogenation of n-butene to 1,3-butadiene. β-CoMoO4 phase of the catalyst was dominantly formed and oxygen mobility of the catalyst increased with decreasing calcination temperature. Conversion of n-butene and yield for 1,3-butadiene increased with decreasing calcination temperature. Thus, the catalytic performance of Co9Fe3Bi1Mo12O51 was closely related to both β-CoMoO4 phase and oxygen mobility of the catalyst. The Co9Fe3Bi1Mo12O51 catalyst calcined at 475 °C, which retained the largest β-CoMoO4 phase and the highest oxygen mobility, showed the best catalytic performance.
