High low-temperature CO oxidation activity of platinum oxide prepared by magnetron sputtering

- Magnetron sputtered Pt oxide outperforms Pt in catalyzing CO oxidation in 450-500 K range.
- High PtOx activity is due to bifunctional mechanism between metallic and cationic Pt.
- PtOx overheating leads to reduction, roughening, and lowering its catalytic activity.
- Model systems are compared to a real-use catalyst for use in, e.g., fuel cells.
