Liquid phase surface alloying of AZ91D magnesium alloy with Al and Ni powders

► TIG surface alloying of AZ91D with Al + Ni caused formation of hard intermetallics. ► The hardness of the alloyed layer reached to 162 HV which was twice of that of AZ91D. ► Wear rate of alloyed layer was reduced to half of the wear rate of untreated AZ91D.
