Microstructure development and properties of the AlCuFe quasicrystalline coating on near-α titanium alloy

► Magnetron sputtering enables deposition of a quasicrystalline AlCuFe coating on titanium alloy. ► AlCuFe coating exhibits higher hardness than the substrate material. ► AlCuFe coating improves oxidation resistance of the TIMETAL 834 alloy at 750 °C.
