Synthesis and microstructure observation of titanium carbonitride nanostructured coatings using reactive plasma spraying in atmosphere

► Nanostructured TiCN coating was deposited by atmospheric reactive plasma spraying. ► The coating was mainly composed of columnar nanograins perpendicular to the substrate surface. ► The nanostructured coating displayed superior hardness and toughness characteristics.
