Helmholtz-pair transmit coil with integrated receive array for high-resolution MRI of trabecular bone in the distal tibia at 7Â T

► A novel RF coil is described for micro-MRI of trabecular bone at 7 T. ► Simulations of the B1 field and SAR agree with experimental results. ► In vivo MR images of the distal tibia show improved visibility of trabeculae. ► SNR increases approximately linearly compared to 1.5 T and 3 T.
