Effect of oxygen gas pressure on orientations of Cu2O nuclei during the initial oxidation of Cu(100), (110) and (111)

► Nucleation of nonepitaxial Cu2O islands occurs at a critical oxygen pressure. ► The critical oxygen pressure depends on the surface orientations of Cu substrates. ► Such dependence is ascribed to O surface sticking and diffusion of oxide nucleation.
