Long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) H19 has been found as oncogene which overexpressed in various cancers. Polymorphisms in lncRNA H19 have been shown to be associated with the risk of cancer, but the findings are inconsistent. The present study aimed to inspect the possible association between H19 gene polymorphisms and breast cancer (BC) risk in a sample of southeast Iranian population. The H19 rs3741219, rs217727, rs2839698 and rs3741216 gene variants were genotyped in 230 cases and 240 controls by the polymerase chain reaction restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP). The findings revealed the rs3741219, rs217727 and rs2839698 polymorphisms significantly increase the risk of BC. While the rs3741216 variant was significantly associated with decreased risk of BC. In conclusion, our findings provide an association between lncRNA H19 variants and BC risk in a sample of southeast Iranian population. Further studies in a larger sample size across different ethnicities are requisite to confirm our findings.
