The ideal course of the motor development in the infant is a suitable guideline for osteopathic diagnosis. Thus the CNS maturity can be assessed by comparing the normal motor development and the actual motor activity observed in the patient in prone and supine position. If there are signs of abnormalities, the postural reactions and reflexes should also be examined in order to detect deviations and possible dysfunctions. Following this procedure, dysfunctions and pathologies can also be distinguished so that a physiotherapeutic treatment can be initiated, if necessary. Likewise, the ideal motor development can serve as a therapy control: the reflexes and postural reactions, the motor pattern or the mental response to the environment should improve after osteopathic intervention.
