Die Behandlung der chronischen lateralen OSG-Instabilität: Ist der offene Broström noch zeitgemäß?

Acute ankle sprains are one of the most common injuries which result in chronic ankle instability in up to 20% of patients. Therefore, operative treatment is regularly necessary. The open repair as described by Broström-Gould is currently the gold standard for operative stabilization. Many arthroscopic studies could demonstrate that intraarticular lesions occur frequently in patients suffering from chronic instability. Unfortunately, these intraarticular pathologies cannot be diagnosed by MRI sufficiently. Therefore, arthroscopy is recommended in these patients irrespective of the operative procedure. Biomechanical studies could demonstrate equal results following open and arthroscopic repair. Until today, there are no studies available comparing the results after the open Broström-Gould technique and the arthroscopic reconstruction. Nevertheless, arthroscopic techniques are increasingly becoming established as the results following arthroscopic repair are promising.
