Extended trochanteric osteotomy: Component retrieval and repair

The burden of revision total hip arthroplasty is increasing due to the rising incidence of total hip arthroplasty. Frequently, additional exposure is needed that is not required during the initial procedure in order to adequately visualize the components and to avoid iatrogenic bone loss or complications. Several osteotomies have been described in order to help achieve this goal; however, we advocate for the extended trochanteric osteotomy. This osteotomy allows for a safe, efficient, and accurate method for revision of cemented or cementless femoral components.
