Application of a yeast estrogen reporter system for screening zearalenone degrading microbes

► We performed a method to select microbes for zearalenone degradation. ► An estrogen screen test was adapted to biodegradation tests. ► The most appropriate microbe with the weakest harmful biological effects was selected. ► We highlighted the necessity to employ bio-tests in biodegradation assays.
