► Chemical and mineralogical compositions of Jungar coal fly ash were reported. ► The size distribution, resistivity and cohesive force of fly ash were experimented. ► V-I curve of high-alumina fly ash under operating ESPs was explained. ► The mechanism of high-alumina fly ash escaping from ESPs was discussed.
