Noradrenergic antidepressants increase cortical dopamine: Potential use in augmentation strategies

► Noradrenergic antidepressants selectively increase DA function in PFC but not in NAc. ► The combination of reboxetine and mirtazapine selectively increases DA and NE in mPFC. ► This evokes antidepressant-like effects (FST) and increases c-fos and BDNF in HPC. ► Citalopram pre-treatment does not interfere with the effects of these drugs. ► Potentially useful in SSRI-resistant depression and negative symptoms in schizophrenia.
