► Global cerebral ischemia in gerbils induces spatial memory impairments. ► Post treatment with EGb 761 improves cognitive deficits after ischemia in gerbil. ► Long term treatment with EGb 761 protects the hippocampal CA1 neurons. ► EGb 761 inhibits the decrease in plasma SOD activity.
