Chemical composition and effect on intestinal Caco-2 cell viability and lipid profile of fixed oil from Cynomorium coccineum L.

► The composition and biological activity of Cynomorium coccineum fixed oil were studied. ► The oil was composed mainly by triacylglycerols and derivates, with high levels of essential fatty acids. ► Fixed oil exerted a significant cytotoxic effect on colon cancer Caco-2 cells. ► C. coccineum oil induced lipid profile modulation in intestinal epithelial cells, without affecting cell viability. ► Results qualify C. coccineum oil as a potential resource for food/pharmaceutical applications.
