Apoptosis and mutagenicity induction by a characterized aqueous extract of Baccharis articulata (Lam.) Pers. (Asteraceae) on normal cells

► We investigate the toxic effects of characterized extract of Baccharis articulata. ► The extract induced apoptosis in PBMCs and mutagenic effects on erythrocytes of mice. ► The main compounds found were luteolin, acacetin, chlorogenic acid and tannins. ► The phytotherapy use of this species should be limited as it may cause damage.
