► We looked at the effect of long- and short-term feed restriction in Atlantic salmon on leptins. ► Leptins have a complex lipostatic function in Atlantic salmon, possibly under the influence of photoperiod. ► Short-term feed restriction causes a latent upregulation of lepa-type genes in the fatty tissues.
