High-throughput molecular diagnosis of circumsporozoite variants VK210 and VK247 detects complex Plasmodium vivax infections in malaria endemic populations in Papua New Guinea

▶ We developed a post-PCR assay to identify VK210 and VK247 Plasmodium vivax strains. ▶ We reported VK210 and VK247 frequencies in two Papua New Guinea regions. ▶ Single VK210 infections were most common followed by mixed strain and single VK247. ▶ In both study locations observed that mixed strain infections were higher than expected.
