Reproductive plasticity in Polistes paper wasp workers and the evolutionary origins of sociality

► We test reproductive potential in Polistes dominulus wasp workers. ► Juvenile hormone treatment and adult nutrition increased reproductive potential. ► Larger workers had higher reproductive potential than smaller workers. ► Worker body size is associated with fat content. ► Reproductive plasticity may originate with mechanism common in solitary insects.
