► We measured brain activity during difficult shape discriminations. ► Shape-selective activity was present in the LOC and V4 before behavioral responses. ► Activity in the LOC was correlated with participants' forthcoming reaction times. ► The LOC is critically involved in perceptual decisions about object shape.
