► We examine neural activity for negative number paired comparisons using fMRI. ► Negatives demonstrate a positive-like distance effect in the intraparietal sulcus. ► Negatives also show distance-related activity in the caudate. ► Mixed sign comparisons demonstrate more complex effect pattern. ► Negative number understanding is supported by number-sensitive and extended areas.
