fMRI of the brainstem using dual-echo EPI

► We use cardiac-gated dual-echo EPI to measure neuronal activity of the brainstem. ► We use grimacing and jaw clenching to activate Facial and Trigeminal motor nuclei. ► 24 combinations of normalization and spatial smoothing procedures are compared. ► Five of the tested combinations successfully detect activation of both nuclei.
