Sustained responses for pitch and vowels map to similar sites in human auditory cortex

► Vowel formant structure and periodicity were violated separately or together. ► Specific activity for both parameters was evaluated by MEG and EEG. ► Results showed stimulus-specific sustained responses for formants and periodicity. ► The specific responses were both generated in lateral Heschl's gyrus. ► Lateral Heschl's gyrus may be generally specialized for vowel (speech) perception.
