Neural-activity mapping of memory-based dominance in the crow: neural networks integrating individual discrimination and social behaviour control

▶Neural correlates of dominance formation were examined in crows. ▶Zenk expression in subpallium correlated to social behaviour and to cognition in a subset of nuclei. ▶Zenk expression in meso-/nidopallium responded to familiarity of conspecific stimulus. ▶Neural activity in hippocampus correlated with both factors. ▶Social behaviour and cognition may be integrated by a pallial-subpallial network, via hippocampus.
