► Effects of DCS on spontaneous place recognition were examined. ► DCS enhanced spatial memory according to a reversed U-shaped dose-response curve. ► DCS has potential to facilitate encoding, consolidation and retrieval processes of spatial memory. ► NMDA receptors play important roles in these memory processes.
