Estrogen protects against amyloid-β toxicity by estrogen receptor α-mediated inhibition of Daxx translocation

► We explore if estrogen protects cells from Aβ42 toxicity by inhibiting ASK1 or modulating Trx1. ► We examine estrogen effects on AKT and ERK pathways as wells as on ASK1 and Trx1. ► We explore the contribution of estrogen receptors by using agonists against αor β. ► Estrogen's protection against Aβ42 occurs via ERα, AKT, and the inhibition of ASK1. ► The protective mechanisms are independent of Trx1.
