Increased cutaneous NGF and CGRP-labelled trkA-positive intra-epidermal nerve fibres in rat diabetic skin

► We determine that cutaneous NGF is upregulated in a rat model of type 1 diabetes. ► We examine the phenotype of the remaining intraepidermal nerve fibres in the small fibre neuropathy. ► A higher proportion of trkA fibres express CGRP in the diabetic skin. ► This may be important in the development of neuropathic pain.
