Viewing red prior to a strength test inhibits motor output

► Viewing red (relative to blue or gray) prior to a strength test inhibited the rate of force development. ► The color manipulation did not influence the peak amplitude of force production. ► The influence of color on motor output took place outside of participants' conscious awareness. ► All results were obtained using carefully controlled hues equated on lightness and chroma.
