Hypersensitivity and hyperinnervation of the rat hind paw following carrageenan-induced inflammation

► Some human pain syndromes are accompanied by increased sensory axon density. ► We examined the role of inflammation in promoting sensory hyperinnervation. ► 3 Days after plantar carrageenan injection, mechanical and thermal sensitivity were increased. ► This was accompanied by a 2-fold increase in cutaneous innervation density. ► Inflammation-induced sensory hyperinnervation may contribute to hypersensitivity.
