► First one using ERPs to study the time course of facial trustworthiness appraisal. ► C1 and LPC can be evoked during facial trustworthiness appraisal. ► C1 is related to face categorization driven by structural properties of the face. ► Greater amounts of motivated attention are allocated to untrustworthy faces. ► LPC effect was consistent with predication of emotion overgeneralization hypothesis.
