Motile responses of cochlear outer hair cells stimulated with an alternating electrical field

► EAEF stimulus varied from 50 Hz to 4 kHz in continuous, burst and sweeping modes. ► Electromotile amplitudes ranged from 0.3% to 3.2% of total cell length. ► Electromotile amplitude remained constant from 2 kHz to 4 kHz. ► Total cell length decreased in amounts varying from 0.1% to 4.3%. ► Salicylate affected electromotility but not slow motility; Gd3+ affected both.
