Plasmodium falciparum: The potential of the cancer chemotherapeutic agent cisplatin and its analogues as anti-malarials

► The cytotoxicity of cisplatin analogues was determined in Plasmodium falciparum. ► DNA-targeted Pt analogues were the most cytotoxic. ► Carboplatin and transplatin were weakly cytotoxic in P. falciparum. ► Cisplatin and analogues could form the basis for a new class of anti-malarial drugs.
